Selecting Stylish and Comfortable Summer Footwear
Goodbye, Winter Boots—Hello, Summer! As warmer weather beckons, and sandals and flip-flops become the norm, it’s crucial to consider the well-being of your hardworking feet. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), nearly eight out of ten Americans have experienced foot problems due to uncomfortable or ill-fitting shoes.
“Summer often means increased activity levels, which can lead to foot and ankle discomfort or even injury,” explains Marcus Yetter, DPM, a podiatrist at Ankle & Foot Clinic of Orange County and APMA member. “Moreover, many of the trendy warm-weather shoes, such as flip-flops and sandals, may not prioritize foot health.”
Once confined to beaches, flip-flops have become a fashion staple, but not all styles are foot-friendly. Here are some tips for selecting flip-flops:
- Opt for high-quality, soft leather over vinyl or rubber to minimize blisters and irritations. Look for the APMA Seal of Acceptance for certified footwear.
- Ensure the flip-flop bends at the ball of the foot without folding completely in half.
- Choose straps that fit comfortably and securely, avoiding styles that allow your foot to hang off the edge.
- Replace worn-out flip-flops promptly, especially if they show signs of significant wear.
- Avoid wearing flip-flops for extended periods, as they lack adequate arch support and shock absorption, especially for activities like walking or sports.
“For individuals with heel pain or diabetes, it’s best to avoid flip-flops altogether,” advises Dr. Yetter.
Sandals, another summer staple, offer versatility without sacrificing foot health. Here’s how to ensure comfort and support while staying fashionable:
- Use cushioned inserts to enhance support in flat or slide sandals, which may lack adequate cushioning.
- Choose gladiator sandals made of soft, supple leather to minimize toe irritation and heel calluses.
- Opt for heels lower than two inches for better stability and reduced risk of foot and ankle injuries.
- Look for sandals with rubber soles for improved traction, especially in wedges or espadrilles.
- Limit wear of peep-toe sandals to short periods to prevent foot pressure and consider using toe inserts for added comfort.
- Select ankle-wrap sandals with soft, breathable straps to minimize friction and avoid wrapping straps too tightly.
By prioritizing comfort and support in summer footwear choices, you can enjoy the season without compromising your foot health.
